WASHINGTON (AP) – In her native state of South Carolina, former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley was soundly defeated by former President Donald Trump in the primaries.
As the polls closed across the state at 7 p.m., the Associated Press announced Donald Trump as the winner. Based on an examination of AP Vote Cast, a thorough survey of Republican South Carolina primary voters, the AP made its race call.

The poll supports pre-election day polling that showed  Donald Trump leading Haley by a significant margin across the state.

In very lopsided races like Saturday’s primary, declaring a winner as the polls close based on the findings of the AP’s Vote Cast survey—and before election authorities officially release tallied votes—is not unprecedented.

According to Vote Cast figures, Donald Trump has prevailed in every election where he has been on the ballot thus far on a par with his prior victories. He is winning by enormous margins throughout the whole state of South Carolina, from the Low Country on the Atlantic coast to the Upcountry in the north.

According to the poll, Trump has significant advantages over other candidates in the Republican primary across the political geography of the state. He is leading from places that lean substantially Republican in general elections to those that lean heavily Democratic, and all points in between.

Voters with postgraduate degrees gave Haley the most support, according to Vote Cast, despite their small proportion of the electorate overall.

Haley’s best chance of winning rested on continuing to compete in historically Republican areas while putting up great numbers in those that lean Democratic. Counties that often vote Democrats in general elections were among the places where Haley did best in the state’s last tough GOP primary in 2010. However, Haley’s performance on Vote Cast is nothing close to what is required for her to pull off an upset.

Votes cast prior to Election Day typically rank among the first to be reported of the evening, making them another important metric.

Votes cast before Election Day have tended to lean Democratic, while votes cast on Election Day have tended to lean Republican since the early voting debate became so heated during the 2020 presidential campaign.

Haley would have required a strong showing among early voters in order to survive the votes later in the night from more conservative voters who cast ballots on Election Day, since a large portion of her support came from more moderate voters this campaign.

Vote Cast revealed that Haley performed marginally better among early voters than she did among those who cast their ballots on Election Day, but she still lagged far behind Donald Trump in both categories.

After counting every vote, Donald Trump might almost double the 33% he got in his 2016 South Carolina victory over a considerably more formidable six-candidate field. With the exception of Richland and Charleston, the second and third most populous counties in the state, he won 44 out of 46 counties that year.

Vote Cast offers an in-depth look at the electorate, illuminating who cast their ballots, the issues they care about, their opinions of the candidates, and the reasons behind their decisions. FOR MORE INFORMATION CLICK…
