In order to fill a quarterback need, the Seahawks agreed to trade for former Washington Commanders starter Sam Howell on Thursday in exchange for several draft picks, subject to a physical.

Sam Howell, a fourth-round selection (No. 102) and a sixth-round pick (No. 179) are being traded to the Washington Redskins in exchange for one of the Seahawks’ two third-round picks (No. 78 overall) and a fifth-round pick (No. 152).

The Seahawks still possess a third-round pick, which they obtained in a trade with Denver during the previous draft year, at choice No. 81 overall.

Sam Howell, a 2022 fifth-round pick out of North Carolina, took over the starting job in Washington in his second season and started all 17 games, finishing with a league-high 612 passes attempts, 388 completions (63.4 percent), 21 touchdowns, 21 interceptions and a 78.9 passer rating. Howell also rushed for 263 yards and five touchdowns on 48 carries.

After losing Drew Lock to free agency, the Seahawks now have a seasoned backup quarterback in 23-year-old Howell to support Pro Bowl quarterback Geno Smith.
